PointsBet is one of the biggest, trendiest brands in online sports betting and we now know that they will be in Ohio.

This sportsbook has agreed to an Ohio online sports betting license agreement with Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course. Ohioans can download the up-and-coming sportsbook brand now in an app store near you.

Whether you’re a Cincinnati or Cleveland football fan, college or pro, are living in Ohio or just passing through – there’s a lot to be exciting about with Ohio online sports betting.

From the Bengals surge into another potential Super Bowl to the Cavs ascension, each franchise has plenty of intrigue. And even with the emergence of the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were just short of appearing the CFP National Championship, it’s an exciting time to be an Ohio sports fan, and a sports betting fan.

As of December 8, 2021, OH Governor Mike DeWine signed the House Bill 29, legalizing sports betting throughout the state. We now know that online sports betting has launched in Ohio on January 1, 2023, and that PointsBet OH was there Day 1 in the Buckeye State.

PointsBet Sportsbook has taken a unique approach to sports betting that is worth exploring. Below, we will review their app and whether you should give it a shot.

What is PointsBetting? A crash course for Ohio

PointsBet is the only sportsbook in the country to offer “PointsBetting.” So what is it?

To put it simply, PointsBetting is a high risk / high reward method of betting where customers are rewarded for how correct or incorrect their wagers are.

On a traditional sportsbook, before you place a bet, you would have fixed odds that you need to beat. And if you hit your bet hits then you would receive your set winnings. You know when you place the wager how much it can cost you if you lose, or how much you can win if it goes well.

PointsBetting OH examples

When PointsBetting with PointsBet, each point of difference from the spread or total acts as a multiplier of the original stake, allowing a bettor to win or lose more based on the outcome of their wager. Still a little confused? Let’s go over an example:

  • You choose to bet on the Browns vs. Bengals Over 48 points scored
  • You choose a stake of $10 for this PointsBetting Ohio wager.

The game ends with a score of 28-26, for a total of 54 points. You were correct in that it was over the set line, and not just by one point. The 54 points is six points over the total.

With PointsBetting, you receive the stake amount that you chose, $10 in this case, multiplied by the number of points over (or under!) the established line.

So in this instance your wager would be worth a $60 win. That’s the $10 stake, multiplied by the 6 points over the line ($10 x 6 = $60).

PointsBetting can be risky

On PointsBet, every yard, point and play is absolutely crucial to your potential winnings or losings. Let’s say you elect to place a PointsBetting wager on Joe Burrow throwing for more than 250 yards on a given NFL Sunday.

You choose $2 as your stake amount, and sit down to watch the game. However, the Bengals elect to establish the run with Joe Mixon, get a defensive TD, and cruise to victory with Burrow only throwing for 195 yards… 55 yards below the betting line.

While your winnings add up quickly, so can your losses. You would be on the hook for the $2 stake amount multiplied by the 55 yards that the bet went under.

That’s a net total of -$110 ($2 x 55).

Of note, we highly recommend paying close attention to your stop losses when PointsBetting.

PointsBet launch date in OH

Online sports betting officially began in the state of Ohio on January 1st, 2023. PointsBet has its’ market access agreement in place with the Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.

Even though sports betting legalization is still materializing, Ohio has the makings of one of, if not THE largest online sports betting state launches in 2023. We’ll bank on PointsBet being one of the biggest players in the Buckeye State to start the year.

PointsBet brand reputation

Like we’ve talked about, PointsBet is a relatively new kid on the block but that doesn’t mean they aren’t already a threat in the sportsbook industry. PointsBet has employed two superstars to add some cache to their name: NBA MVP and 11x All-Star, Allen Iverson as well as former NFL All-Pro cornerback, Darrelle Revis.

Each of these stars will serve as brand ambassadors to help grow PointsBet around the United States, including Ohio.

PointsBet has built their brand around the slogan “Stay Sharp.” Whether you want to try their forward-thinking “PointsBetting” model or you just want to bet on some single games, PointsBet Sportsbook is proving itself as one of the biggest risers in the betting industry.

Not only is PointsBet known for its extensive markets and bet types that are offered but the features and promotions are unique, timely and frequent.

PointsBet has yielded a lot of success in states such as Illinois and New York – there’s no reason to think PointsBet wouldn’t be a hit in Ohio.

It is worth noting in recent months, PointsBet has received some pushback on social media. From betting limits placed on customers to long wait times to getting a bet through, PointsBet has been on the wrong end of publicity, specifically on Twitter.

But with a new sportsbook, they’re going to work through the kinks and have some ebbs and flows. Other big-name brands in this industry are subjects to this criticism, but this is worth pointing out for PointsBet users.

Signing up on PointsBet

Joining PointsBet is painless, as you only need to follow a few steps.

  1. First, you will need to click “Sign Up” on the top right on their home page on their desktop or front of their app.
  2. Next, you will type in your first and last name.
  3. Finally, you will then need to fill out some other private information including the last 4 digits of your social security number.

Once PointsBet OH can verify your identity, your account will be up and running in no time. Please note, in the state of Ohio, you must be at least 21 years of age to play. So, for some college kids that may be coming from other states where the legal gambling age is 18, you are out of luck.

Furthermore, you must be within the state borders of Ohio to place a bet. However, it’s important to note, you do not need to be a resident of Ohio to place a bet.

Maybe you’re from out of state and you’re passing by to catch an Ohio State football game. On PointsBet OH, you have the ability to place a bet as long as you are located in the state.

Get paid quickly by PointsBet OH

PointsBet Sportsbook has a number of different options their users can choose from to deposit money into their account:

  1. Cash: PointsBet has made partnerships with a local Ohio casino race track where you can make cash deposits (and withdrawals). It’s likely that in-person transactions will be permitted at the Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course
  2. ACH/eCheck: This one is self-explanatory but it may the slowest of the bunch just because it is contingent on verifying your relevant bank information and other private information as well as shipping.
  3. Online Banking: This deposit method may take up to three days but is usually much faster.
  4. Credit/Debit Card
  5. PayPal
  6. PayNearMe: The PayNearMe option is an interesting feature for PointsBet users. This allows users to make cash deposits at select locations near them. While this method is for deposits only, it can be really convenient. All you need to do is go to the drop-down menu on the front page and select “PayNearMe.” After you input your zip code, PointsBet will provide you with multiple locations close to you where you can go and make your deposits. Some examples of places you may go are the local CVS or 7/11. This option is cash only and it allows users to deposit up to $500 into their account every 24 hours.

Withdrawals from PointsBet OH

Sportsbooks will have fewer withdrawal options versus ways you can deposit, it’s just the nature of how it works. It’s easier logistically for PointsBet to accept money than manually process payouts. Rest assured though, you can get paid very quickly and easily, without hassle.

Mobile App Overview

One of the biggest draws towards PointsBet has to be their interactive and innovative mobile app.

PointsBet Mobile app
As a newer player in the game, PointsBet has to dominate in this area and they have. Their app is built for optimal mobile performance – it’s easy to navigate and locate all of the markets available on the front page. You can also find any odds boost that they are promoting for that day on the front.

A sticking point of many of these sportsbooks app is their inability to upload stats and updated odds in a timely manner. That is not the case at PointsBet, there’s tons of data that will be readily accessible on the PointsBet OH mobile app.

iOS users can download the app from the Apple store while Android users can download the app via a link on the online sportsbook.

PointsBet OH desktop betting

PointsBet’s desktop is slick and easy to navigate:

PointsBet desktop overview

You will find the most popular games headlined on the front page under “Featured” with some upcoming events you can wager on the right hand side.

You can find all of the available markets they offer via a dropdown menu at the top of screen. Another cool feature is the “Live” section which you can click on right next to the Featured section on your homepage.

This will list any live events that you can bet on at that time.

The color scheme of the desktop site is a red and black combination which is presentable and easy to read.

Security: PointsBet Ohio is safe

For online bettors, safety and security should really be near the top of the priority list when you’re deciding where to wager your money. And although PointsBet may not have the big-name allure as some of the other brands, there are certainly legit and reputable.

With PointsBet, you have nothing to worry about. Not only is it a safe and secure product but they are fully licensed and is regulated by the Ohio Casino Control Commission, which means they will keep a close eye on all the gaming operations in Ohio to guarantee your security.

The company will take certain precautions to safeguard your personal information by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption as well as using “Member ID” to ensure minors will not be able to use their site.

Available betting markets in Ohio

For new bettors in new legalized states like Ohio, it may be best to stick with the major sports. That means plenty of wagering on the Bengals, Browns, Cavs, Guardians and Blue Jackets for Ohioans. But if you want to branch outside the major sports, PointsBet Sportsbook has a large selection for you to choose from.

It’s also important to remember that PointsBet offers a long list of markets beyond any fixed odds. You will have the opportunity to win more money based on how accurate your pick was if you elect to try out “PointsBetting.” Here are some of the different markets you can wager on:

  • Aussie Rules
  • Baseball
  • Basketball
  • Boxing
  • Cricket
  • Cycling
  • Darts
  • e-Sports
  • Football
  • Golf
  • Hockey
  • MMA
  • Motor Racing
  • Rugby League
  • Rugby Union
  • Soccer
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Volleyball

Tons of betting variety

Between the markets offered and bet types you can place, PointsBet Sportsbook may just have the most versatile sportsbook among the competition.

PointsBets offers up to 500 different bet types per game depending on the sport.

From wagering on a coin flip in the Bengals game to placing a live bet on Evan Mobley’s point total, the choice is yours on where you want to place your money! Let’s take a look at some of the most popular bet types on PointsBet:

Moneyline

This is the easiest and most straightforward bet. When you wager on a moneyline, you’re betting on an outright winner and that’s it.

If you were to bet on a favorite, your payout would be smaller. But say you bet on a nice underdog on the moneyline like the Bengals in the AFC Championship game over the Chiefs last season – you’d see a nice payday. Let’s look at this example:

Bengals (+270) @ Chiefs (-350)
These were the pre-game, fixed odds on the moneyline before the AFC championship last season. This means if you were to:

-Bet $100 on Cincinnati ML, you would win $270
-Bet $100 on Kansas City ML, you would win $28.57

Spread

While the moneyline is the most straightforward, the spread is definitely the most popular single bet you can make.

Oddsmakers will designate a spread before any game you’d like to bet on. You will have the ability to either “lay” or “take” the points on the spread which can help you win your wager. Let’s look over this example:

The Browns are traveling to Heinz Field to take on new Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky in a divisional matchup. The Browns are designated as 3.5 point favorites. On PointsBet OH, this would look like:

Browns -3.5 (-110)
Steelers +3.5 (-110)

This means the Browns must win by 4 or more points to cover the spread. Therefore, even if the Browns win, they do not necessarily “cover the spread.” Point spreads will typically have odds from +100 to -120 but the juice will typically be at -110 for most spread bets.

Total

Maybe you don’t want to bet on either side of the game. Then point total could be for you! Point total bets are simple: oddsmakers will set a point total for the combined points scored in the upcoming game and you can either bet on the over or under.

Parlays

Betting parlays are the new craze in sports betting. Parlays are at least two individual wagers combined under one betslip that is dependent on each other. The appeal of parlays is the payout is exponentially higher than single game wagers but what often comes with high reward is high risk. Let’s check out an example:

You’re going to Nationwide arena to see the Blue Jackets take on the Carolina Hurricanes. You’re confident in the Blue Jackets getting a win and Patrik Laine getting a point in tonight’s game.

If you were to bet these as separate, individual slips, you’d see a nice payday. But if you were to put them together on one betslip and make this a parlay, your payout would be substantially higher.

But if either one of your legs were to not win, your parlay would collapse and you would lose your wager.

Futures

In futures bets, you can place a wager on an event that will occur at a later time. This is much different from a single-game wager.

On PointsBet Sportsbook Ohio, you will have the ability to place a futures bet on a league MVP, division winner or the Super Bowl champ. The best part about placing a futures are the generous odds but the delayed gratification can be a sticking point for some bettors.

Prop Bets

Prop bets, also known as side bets, is simply any bet in sports betting not tied to the game or outcome of the game. On PointsBet OH, you can place wagers on certain prop bets like Ja’Marr Chase’s over/under on his receiving total for this upcoming week or even something as silly as who will win the opening tip of the Cavaliers game.

PointsBet Ohio promotions

PointsBet has a number of unique promotions and offers compared to other sportsbooks. The most obvious is their PointsBetting type of wagering which allows a user to maximize their winnings or losings which is contingent on their accuracy of the bet.

But another cool feature is their “Karma Kommittee,” which is a nice assurance that other sportsbooks don’t offer. In their Karma Komittee, PointsBet Sportsbook could give you a refund on a “bad beat” with bonus bets.

Did a season-ending injury occur during your game? Was there a bad call that dictated the result? PointsBet could have you covered with their Karma Kommittee.

Another aspect that PointsBet offers is their rewards system which allows a user to build up points on every wager they place. You will have the opportunity to earn even more rewards while PointsBetting. Per PointsBet’s terms and conditions, a user will receive:

  • 1 reward point for Every $5 fixed odds bet
  • for Every $1 parlay bet again user will receive 1 reward point
  • 1 reward point for every dollar won or lost with PointsBetting

And beyond that,

  • $100 Parlay = 100 reward points
  • $200 Fixed Odds Bet = 200 reward points
  • $300 In-Play Bet =  300 reward points
